Washington County, Summer 2010

From fieldworker Joseph O’Connell:

My first survey fieldwork project for Traditional Arts Indiana was in Washington County, a large, mostly rural county in the southern part of the state. The project drew on my past experience of the Pekin area, including living and attending school there through age 18, and returning for shorter periods of time since then. I’d often talked with TAI director Jon Kay, who also spent time in Pekin growing up, about local traditions such as the town’s 4th of July Celebration.

In the summer of 2010, we arranged for me to return to Washington County for six weeks of fieldwork highlighting the celebration and exploring other aspects of creative life in the county. On this blog, I’ll be writing about my experience doing fieldwork in Washington County, and posting profiles of survey participants and the practices they helped me document.
