I spent January and February of 2011 doing survey fieldwork in Floyd County, Indiana, on the state’s southern border. This area is just across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky, and shares in a regional life closely connected to that city. Local weather reports and car dealerships include Floyd County in what they call “Kentuckiana.”
I lived in this region for many years, and had a number of starting points in mind when I began the Floyd County survey. Over the next two months of contacting, meeting, and working with residents, I documented topics that range from German-American music to decorated “art cars.” On this blog, I’ll be writing about my experience doing fieldwork in Floyd County, and posting profiles of participants and the practices they helped me record.
