Mariachi Zelaya

November 13, 2013 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

groupCome and enjoy your favorite songs from Mexico and beyond in a free concert with Mariachi Zelaya, a group that embraces the rich and versatile musical tradition of mariachi to create music that resonates with diverse audiences across the state. Sponsored by Indiana University’s Traditional Arts Indiana and funded through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the concert will showcase the talents of this popular Indiana mariachi band.

Born in Zelaya, Nicaragua, the band’s founder Pedro Toledo played salsa, merengue, and cumbia before turning his attention to mariachi. In 1998, he formed Mariachi Zelaya in Atlanta, Georgia, but soon relocated to Indianapolis, which has served as the band’s home base.

Many local musicians have joined the band over the years, forming a multicultural, international ensemble that claims cultural heritage from Nicaragua, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Honduras. The Toledo family takes pride in encouraging the ongoing spread of this musical tradition, and many former members of the band have gone on to form their own mariachis throughout Indiana.

Whether you are in the mood for some traditional favorites, or if you are new to mariachi and you want to hear what it’s all about, come and join Mariachi Zelaya for an unforgettable musical experience.
