Indiana Plants, Indiana Heritage
September 14, 2013 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
Traditional Arts Indiana will join the Warsaw Community Public Library to bring Dani Tippmann, a Miami plant tradition bearer from Whitley County, and Viki Graber, a 4th-generation willow basket maker from Elkhart County, to share their knowledge of Indiana plants and what you can do with them. Sponsored by TAI and funded through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, this free event will showcase the work and knowledge of these two artists.
Indiana plants and Indiana heritage go hand in hand. Dani Tippmann teaches about native Miami foodways all across the Midwest. She will tell you about many edible and useable plants that are part of our state’s traditional foods and pharmacy.
Viki Graber makes baskets using the same methods as her Swiss, German, and Russian settler ancestors. She will demonstrate how she uses some of the hundreds of willow species that live in Indiana, each with their own distinctive colors and textures.
Come and learn surprising things about the plants you thought you knew, and get to know some living traditions right in your backyard!
