Eisā Demonstration and Teaching with the Okinawa YuYuKai
November 17, 2013 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Come and experience the sights and sounds of southern Japan at an Eisā Demonstration and Teaching with the Okinawa YuYuKai. Sponsored by Indiana University’s Traditional Arts Indiana and funded through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, this free event will feature YuYuKai members of all ages who will introduce Okinawa’s distinct regional culture and history.
The Indianapolis-based Okinawa YuYukai has shared many traditions over the years with Indiana residents, including Okinawan language, music, and dance. One dance in particular is Eisā, a kind of energetic, powerful drum-dancing from Okinawa that is now performed all over the world. The YuYuKai will present a teaching forum on Okinawan culture and a demonstration of Eisā, followed by a chance to learn Eisā from YuYuKai members.
